If you have the right HVAC system for your needs, it can easily last you several years or even decades, given that you take care of it. Even the best HVAC systems are prone to breakdowns and faults, and it just boils down to how quickly you can fix the issue and how well you can prevent problems from happening in the first place.

Improper care, poor installation, or incorrect use will damage even the most durable HVAC solutions on the market. Here is a quick overview of some common issues that HVAC owners face and some simple fixes for them.

Installation

Often people will get a new HVAC, and once it’s installed and fired up, it doesn’t deliver the experience they had expected. It’s possible that there may be an issue with the unit, but in most cases, it is an installation error that is causing the HVAC system to malfunction or, at least, not function optimally.

It may not have been installed properly if you are getting poor cooling, electrical problems, water leaks, or excessive noise from a brand-new HVAC. This is a slightly technical problem to resolve, so your best bet is to get a professional who can take care of it.

Insulation

Insulation of the HVAC system plays an important role in its performance. For example, if the piping from the condenser to the evaporator is not properly insulated, you won’t get cool/warm air inside the home because the evaporator isn’t reaching the desired temperature.

Similarly, if there is a leak or a poorly done joint on the ducting or on the piping, cool/warm air will leak out. Not only are you not getting the right temperature air, but the compressor is also continuously running because the room temperature isn’t changing.

Filters

Over time you may feel that the HVAC air is developing an odor. This is more of an issue in humid climates because the moisture can dampen the filter mesh, and mold and fungus can grow on it. In other cases, simply dirt and debris can accumulate on the filter and cause a foul smell in the home.

Moreover, this contaminated air is also a major health concern as it carries viruses and bacteria with it. Make sure you are routinely cleaning out the filters or replacing them with fresh filters if your unit uses disposable filters.

Outdoor Unit Cleaning

The outdoor unit of the HVAC is exposed to the elements more than any other part. If it gets clogged up with leaves or dirt, the internal components won’t be cooled properly, and the system won’t have fresh air to push into your home. As the temperature rises due to bad ventilation, it can cause serious damage to the internal components.

Similarly, dust, debris, and water can also make their way into the inside of the outdoor unit. While the components are water resistant, this dirt can cause problems as well. Water can cause short circuits, which can be quite expensive to fix. Try to have some kind of protection around or on top of the outdoor unit, so it is safe from the elements to some degree.

Noise

If your HVAC system is uncomfortably loud, there may be a problem with the fan or belt. Running the system in such a condition could cause something to break, which would only lead to more problems and a more expensive repair.

Some HVAC problems, such as changing filters, are easy to do and only take a few minutes. Others, such as replacing a squeaky belt, will require some expertise.
