If you live in a warm climate or have a hot garage, you know how important it is to have a cool space to work in. If you spend any amount of time in your garage, whether to work on a car or just hang out, you need to make sure that the space is comfortable.

Unfortunately, garages are often one of the hardest rooms in the house to keep cool. But don’t worry. You can do a few things to air condition your garage and make it a more comfortable space.

Insulate the Garage Door

One of the best ways to keep your garage cool is to insulate the garage door; it helps keep the hot air out and the cool air in. Special garage door insulation kits are available at most home improvement stores. You can keep your garage up to 20 degrees cooler with properly insulated garage doors.

Install a Window Air Conditioner

Another way to cool your garage is to install a window air conditioner. It is a more expensive option but is worth it when you spend a lot of time in your garage. Get a window air conditioner specifically designed for garages if you go this route. These units are made to withstand the heat and humidity of a garage. A window unit will usually cool a space of about 350 square feet, so if your garage is larger, you will likely need more than one unit.

Use a Portable Air Conditioner

If you don’t want to install a window air conditioner, use a portable one instead. Portable air conditioners are less expensive than window units and easy to move from one room to another, so you can put them where they’re needed most. You can even take them with you when you travel.

Portable air conditioners draw in hot air from the room and cool it using a refrigerant. The cooled air is released back into the room. When using a portable air conditioner, you will need to vent it outside by opening a window or using a venting kit.

Install a Ceiling Fan

Another simple and relatively inexpensive option is to install a ceiling fan in your garage. Ceiling fans circulate air and help evaporate sweat, keeping you cool. You can get ceiling fans at most home improvement stores.

Use a Floor Fan

If you don’t want to install a ceiling fan, use a regular floor fan instead. Floor fans are less expensive than ceiling fans and easy to move around. You can put them near open windows to help circulate the air.

Another option is to use a floor fan on one side of the room and a window fan on the other, creating a cross breeze to help cool the room down. If you have a ceiling fan, make sure it is rotating counter-clockwise. It creates a wind-chill effect and helps keep you cool.

There are a few different ways to air condition your garage. Insulating the garage door, using window units, or portable air conditioners are all good options. You can also install a ceiling fan to help circulate the air. Using any of these steps will make your garage a more comfortable space to work in.
