Health organizations across the globe are continuously researching the coronavirus COVID-19, trying to better understand the causes, effects, and possible solutions to shorten this pandemic. As this virus is most commonly contracted through the air and close contact, the importance of coronavirus protection and slowing down the spread is vital to the health of you and your family.
The virus is primarily spread through person-to-person contact. When an infected person coughs or sneezes, respiratory droplets can land in the mouth or nose of people nearby, and then can be inhaled into the lungs. We consider people who show symptoms to be most contagious, but the spread is possible by people who have yet to show symptoms.
Although not as common as the airborne contraction, touching a shared surface can lead to infection. If somebody coughs into their hand and then opens a door, those germs can spread to the next person to touch the door handle. If that person then touches his or her face, the risk of infection increases.
The World Health Organization has urged people all across the world to follow six extremely important guidelines to help slow the spread of COVID-19:
- Maintain social distancing from others, at least six feet
- Avoid touching your face
- Use a tissue or the sleeve of your shirt to cover up your coughs and sneezes
- Wash your hands often, and for at least 20 seconds
- If you cannot wash with soap and water, use hand sanitizer
- Clean and disinfect commonly touched objects or shared surfaces
For the many people who are advised to stay at home, indoor air quality is also an important factor in staying healthy and slowing the spread of the disease.
