Gas Furnaces
How to Choose the Right Furnace
Are you thinking about upgrading your furnace but not quite sure where to begin?
We understand. Furnaces are more efficient than ever, with a plethora of features designed to keep you comfortable. They come in different sizes and shapes, some more powerful than others. They also have different price points based on their efficiency ratings.
The thermostat is the brains of your heating, ventilation, and air conditioning (HVAC) system. But it’s the furnace that provides all the muscle, teaming up with your ductwork to send warm air throughout your Michigan home.
And always remember, a happy home is a warm one! It could only take a few cold days in a row with no indoor heat for all the pipes in your home to freeze.
What matters most is to pick the right furnace that fits your budget and the size of your home. Our team at Sharon's Heating & Air Conditioning has the knowledge and expertise to help you make that choice. We’re a trusted name in Westland, MI, for creating healthy homes. Give us a call today—we can schedule a free consultation to help with your next home improvement project.
Choosing the Right Furnace Speed and Heating Capacities
Furnaces have different fan options and can heat at different capacities. These features will impact your comfort, installation cost, and indoor air quality (IAQ).
Single-stage furnaces have just two heating settings: on or off. Your furnace switches on and continues to run to reach the desired temperature. Once it reaches the temperature, the furnace turns off. Single-stage furnaces are the most affordable models and easiest to install. But they are the least efficient and tend to create hot and cold spots in larger homes.
Two-stage furnaces have a secondary heating setting that is usually 60 or 70 percent of full capacity. This allows your furnace to heat your home more evenly, producing a more consistent temperature from room to room. In addition to producing better heating, the lower capacity heating stage runs quieter.
Modulating furnaces have multiple heating stages, usually spanning a range of 40 to 100 percent capacity. The exact number of capacity stages will vary across furnace models. This allows them to regulate energy use while maximizing comfort.
Variable-speed furnaces have fans that can adjust their speed to provide precise comfort in contrast to fixed-speed motors. They run longer at slower fan speeds and lower heating capacities, improving efficiency while lowering your energy bills. Because they do not frequently cycle on and off, these systems tend to have fewer breakdowns.
Variable-speed furnaces are much more adept in maintaining your indoor air quality, catching harmful particles, and eliminating excess moisture that causes mold growth. Larger homes benefit tremendously from variable-speed furnaces.
Choosing an Efficient Furnace
The AFUE (annual fuel utilization efficiency) rating on your furnace indicates how much energy it converts. An energy-efficient furnace with an AFUE rating of 95 can convert 95 percent of the energy it consumes into heat.
The higher the AFUE rating, the more money you save on monthly utility bills. Energy-efficient furnaces emit fewer greenhouse gases and make less noise when they operate. If you want to reduce your home’s carbon footprint, the perfect place to start is with your heating and cooling equipment!

“On Tuesday, October 15, 2024, I had my annual furnace check-up/tune-up to be sure that the furnace is ready for winter. Zach Davis was the HVAC Technician who came to my house to do the job. From the minute he showed up at my front door, I was impressed with him; he was on time, and polite, and professional as he introduced himself, offering to wear shoe covers to protect my floor. I showed him the furnace, and he got right to work, coming upstairs only once to adjust the thermostat so as to turn up the temperature. A little while later, he came to tell me that he was finished, and that my furnace was (thankfully) in good shape. He outlined what he had done, going through each thing he had checked step by step. The last thing he named was something different—I've had a furnace inspection every year for many years, and never before has any technician carried a vacuum cleaner along with the usual tools. Zach had a small vacuum cleaner, and mentioned that after he had finished the check-up, he performed a "clean-up," by vacuuming dust out of the furnace. I was so pleasantly surprised! Never before has any furnace I've ever owned been cleaned with a vacuum cleaner after the check-up was done….that is, never until Tuesday, October 15, 2024. All in all, I was so impressed with the whole furnace check-up experience. Zach couldn't have been nicer or more efficient and professional, and I now have genuine peace of mind knowing that my furnace will keep my house warm until spring. (And if something does go wrong during the cold months, I feel very confident in knowing I can call on you to solve the problem.) Please thank Zach for a job well done. Sincerely yours, Miriam Shaw; Dearborn, Michigan.”
