R-410A Refrigerant Phase Out: What Homeowners Need to Know
Due to the environmental impact of R-410A, the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) has announced that it will be phased out and replaced by more eco-friendly alternatives. In this article, we will provide a comprehensive guide to the R-410A refrigerant phase out and what it means for homeowners.
Why Are A/C Prices Expected To Increase 15-20% in 2025?
The EPA’s new refrigerant mandate, which takes effect 1/1/2025, states that manufacturers must now make systems with the new approved refrigerant (R-454B). This is a required transition away the previous refrigerant, R-410A, as the new refrigerant is more environmentally friendly. The new rule prohibits the manufacture, import, distribution, and sale of products containing R-410A effective January 1, 2025. Manufacturers will be making systems that support the new required refrigerant (R-454B), which are estimated to cost 15-20% more than current systems, and will take more skill to install.
Will the New Refrigerant Work in Existing R-410A or R-22 Systems?
No. R-454B is NOT a drop-in replacement for R-410A or R-22. R-454B is mildly flammable and requires a compatible system to run safely.
How is R-454B Different From R-410A?
Unlike R-410A, R-454B is mildly flammable and requires a different system to run safely. The new refrigerant will be more environmentally friendly, as it has a lower Global Warming Potential (“GWP”).
If I Upgrade Now, Will I Be Able to Have My Refrigerant Service in the Future?
Yes. The components for R-410A systems as well as the refrigerant itself will still be available.
Do You Have Financing Options?
